The International Labour Organization (ILO) Adopts the Violence and Harassment Convention and Recommendation 2019, ILO, Geneva
The International Labor Organization (ILO) adopted a groundbreaking Convention and Recommendation on ending violence and harassment in the world of work on June 21st at its International Labor Conference (ILC) in Geneva.
Article 6 of the convention, makes it very clear that the goal is to ensure the right to equality and non-discrimination in employment and occupation, for women workers, as well as for workers and other persons belonging to one or more vulnerable groups or groups in situations of vulnerability that are disproportionately affected by violence and harassment in the world of work.
The US voted for the convention, but not the recommendation which provides further guidance on the measures required under the convention. Also, voting as a member of the ILO for a convention is not the same as ratifying it. As with any treaty, ratification requires the support of two thirds of the US Senate and the President’s signature. But like with the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), cities, counties, and states across our nation can act locally. They can pass laws that adopt the articles and Recommendations to take steps to make our nation a place where we can all thrive.
